Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: For Hell Brook Tr. there is limited parking at Big Spring pullout; but adequate for the usage it receives. Lots of parking for Long Trail on 108 near trailhead and much more up the road in the Smugglers Notch Picnic Area. 0.8 mile walk between the trailheads.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No significant crossings.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Hell Brook nicely blazed. Signage very clear at all junctions. Few blowdowns all easily stepped over. Many old bog bridges on upper section of Hell Brook have seen better days. Being Mansfield area I'm sure GMC knows of any issues and it is just a matter of priorities and time available with the great staff they have.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Hell Brook would be difficult for dogs on account of the wet ledge scrambles where it would hard for owner to assist them safely. Also the LT north of the Chin is a challenge on exposed ledge for them.
Bugs
Bugs: None today.

Comments
Comments: Hell Brook and LT used going up and LT along with Profanity Tr. used on way down. Running water on all the trails today. Hell Brook is a challenge any day but even more so today on account of how wet the trail was. Several scrambles on wet, slick ledges. Thankfully there are a few handholds and roots to help out. Without these I wouldn't have gone up. Met 2 soloers and 1 couple going down Hell Brook. 1 looked confident the other 3 looked nervous. All had gone up same route so they knew what was ahead. My thoughts on this trail are its advisable to have an alternate route down in case you're uncomfortable with going down same route, it's only a 0.8 mile roadwalk if you take the LT down and takes about the same time. High clouds allowed for some excellent views north and west to the Adirondacks.
