It was a cloudy, foggy, drizzly day. The NOAA report earlier that morning called for 0% precipitation. Just a testament to the unpredictability of New England mountain weather. The Eagles Cut and CCC Road were damp but easily navigable. The Laura Cowles trail was in many cases more like a river than a trail. There were many wet, steep rock formations. Plenty of running water everywhere on the trail. We ran into a couple at the upper junction with Sunset Ridge. In their words, Laura Cowles was not an option for decent and they called us hard core for taking it at all. We then summited and took a moment to "enjoy" the breezy, socked-in summit. After debating descending Sunset or Maple ridge, we decided on sunset ridge for the descent. Crossing the main ridge in poor weather was not something we wanted to try today so we ruled maple ridge out. Sunset ridge was exposed and cloudy but the breeze had subsided, and although there was far less running water than on Laura Cowles there was still plenty of steep, wet ledges. We made a brief detour to Cantilever Rock before returning to
to our car. It was a wet, soggy day on Mansfield! |
