a short connector leads over to gore road and the snowmobile corridor from the snowmobile parking lot. the roads were all well snowmobile packed. we turned right at the first intersection onto 302e then left at the next one onto 302c. this is part of the groton forest loop road that can be driven in summer. we followed 302c to the height of land on the southern ridge of signal shortly past a bridge. from there we hit the woods and bushwhacked north up towards the summit. woods were open with some low growth hardwoods and steep to start. on average the was no more than 6-8 inches of snow all the way up except for a few drifted areas. the grade moderated higher up with very open and beautiful woods before entering mixed forest up to the summit.
we booted the road then wore snowshoes on the bushwhack to and from the summit.
nice hike up signal. great open woods on the bushwhack. with the leaves off there would have been nice views had skies been clearer. still some great local views to nearby butterfield. a big thanks to the nice local that pulled us out of the icy driveway i got us stuck in enroute to the trailhead. despite forecasts for partly cloudy skies we mostly got light snow over the course of the hike. great morning hike.
