Long Trail South from VT-17/Appalacian Gap to Glen Ellen
This was a beautiful hike, despite the ice practically from the parking lot past the Theron Dean shelter. Both hikers in our party used microspikes but they really didn't cut it; it took about 2X the time to get down as it did to get up. Another group after us was on snowshoes but seemed to be struggling more as it was pretty much solid ice below a couple inches of fluffy powder. They reported the desire to descend the ski trails and thumb a ride back to their cars over hiking back down the trail. Crampons would be the best bet, especially for descending and to attack the rock scrambles; most of the sections with the ladder rungs drilled into the rock were completely covered over in ice. Some deeper crusty snow above Stark's nest, but no new foot travel for a few days before us. Very beautiful and soft conditions upon ducking back in on to the trail from the MRG ski trail and Glen Ellen. |
