| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parked at the winter lot (follow the signs), ~4/10-mile roadwalk to the summer TH. |
| Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular |
| Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes |
| Water Crossing Notes: |
The couple that exist on this route have nice wide bridges (the wooden kind). |
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Cut out a nuisance step-over. Otherwise, the trail was clear and in good shape. |
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw a total of 7 dogs, all enjoying themselves. This trail is about as easy as it could get for a dog to reach a 4K right now. |
| Bugs: |
| Lost and Found: |
Couple of 12" long strips of duct tape in the middle of the trail in the morning (I was the first up). Not sure what that was all about, but they're gone now ;) |

Yesterday was dealer's choice as to footwear. I put snowshoes on at the start and kept with them the whole way (televators were nice in spots, and for descent they were great), but the trail for the majority is so well packed that light traction/bare-booting would be fine. In fact, I saw a total of 19 people during my descent, and only one was even carrying snowshoes (and wearing crampons?), and the trail was only slightly lumpy in a few spots. A couple folks skinning up too, looks like lots of folks have been doing that at least as far as the cliff you traverse under.
The weathermen were slightly off on the forecast (which called for clear early, and heavily clouded by 2PM). It started mostly cloudy with a few patches of blue (and there were even a few stray snowflakes here and there), but there was plenty of blue when I summitted around 11:30, and it got even better for a while during my descent until about 1:30 when it started to cloud up again. Probably terrific up there around 12:30... Low wind at the top, and while chilly at ~10F (warm compared to a lot of this winter), I was able to stay up top for a little while without the facemask and goggles, a nice treat. Long-range views were limited (could barely see Lake Champlain, and none of the Whites), but everything closer was great. Much better views than I had this past summer. Awesome hike, and nice to be home by dark for once too. |
