Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Dorset Peak, VT
Trails
Trails: Logging roads, herd paths
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, June 8, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Limited parking at the end of the gravel road. Our 3 cars fit without much room for more without impinging on the side road to a house. If you have very high clearance (think truck or jeep) you could make it to the grassy clearing 1/10-mile further in.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: One main crossing which was easily rock-hoppable and many other places to cross if necessary.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There is evidence of maintenance - the larger blowdowns are cut out, and up on the ridge the main path between the various summits has rough signs indicating what is where.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: We had a 10-pound poodle with us who handled this hike like a champ. Nothing difficult for 4-legged friends.
Bugs
Bugs: The black flies were absolutely terrible from the ridge junction on up. In the late morning, they were also around a bit in the lower elevations, but not bad. When moving, they were tolerable, when stopped, they were atrocious. Bug spray rarely even slows them, so we didn't stop much.

Comments
Comments: Hiked this one with a bunch of AMC friends, old and new, as hike 1 of 2 for the day. Took the usual approach from Dorset which is well-described elsewhere and is less confusing than it sounds. The logging road from the trailhead eventually ends at a washout and crosses the stream about 1/2-mile in, and continues uphill past a run-down cabin and on uphill. It climbs fairly steeply for a while, but the footing is fine. At the junction on the ridge, take the right (uphill - small cairn) and take the subsequent right in a short while (ahead runs nearly level, right heads uphill). After climbing a ways, there is an obvious path heading steeply uphill, this heads to the South Peak (not the main peak). Continue ahead, and there will be signs indicating where to go for the North Peak (main peak). If not, continue ahead nearly level to doorknob junction and hang a left to get to North and the canister.

The canister opens from the top, but the top cap is cracked on the side. On the way back we took the very short diversion loop up over the South Peak (tower remains and the BBQ). A quick and straight-forward hike, under 4 hours to complete. #89 for me.
