Comments
Comments: Anyone out on the trails today knows how exceptional the conditions were -- crisp dry air, bluebird sky, and no wind. The snow in central VT is deep and consolidated. The lower section of Pico was packed and broken, but we lost the trail when it turned left and we very quickly came out on a ski trail prematurely just before the smaller ski lift. We never saw the trail again, neither where it should have come out onto the slope before quickly re-entering, nor higher above where it should have crossed again on the final ascent. Our guess is that Pico Trail is not broken out higher up. Anyway, we ascended on the ski slopes, staying to the left and joining a group of skiers climbing with skins. The woods were full of gorgeous shades of blue, but the extraordinary sight was along the upper slopes where the trees were plastered with vertical walls of snow frozen hard almost like rock. This was a steep, comparatively short hike with beautiful views all around that made for a fun and memorable morning.
