Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Not an issue -- all are bridged or frozen over.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails in decent shape; no significant blowdowns. Snow pack is deep enough, though, that at higher elevations all trails have quite a few low-hanging face-slappy hemlock/spruce branches. If you are taller than three feet, you'll be doing some ducking and bending (and cursing occasionally).

Comments
Comments: A fine day for a snowshoe -- partly clear conditions to start, turning blustery and snowy by late day.

Lot was busy at the beginning of the day; everyone was headed up the Burrows Trail. We chose a quieter (if unbroken) route, and saw no one until near the end of the day, near the summit.

Burrows-Forest City Connector and Forest City Trail are broken and consolidated.

Long Trail to Alpine Trail had not seen anyone for some time -- it's broken now with a decent bed under one to two feet of unconsolidated powder.

We started up the Long Trail past the Alpine Trail, but the snow was so deep, drifted, and tough to negotiate on the final steep sections that we decided to backtrack and take the Alpine Trail, even though the latter appeared to have seen no one for weeks -- we couldn't find any packed bed under the 2-3 feet of snow.

Alpine Trail to Monroe Trail is now broken, but in no way consolidated -- it can at least be followed.

Monroe Trail to Long Trail to summit, and Burrows Trail back to trailhead are packed out. Much of summit is bare rock/ice, having been blasted clean of snow.

Most folks we saw were barebooting or using light traction on Monroe and Burrows. Snowshoes were a must for the route we took, though.

Best part of the day: the section of the Long Trail in the col along the camel's "back," where the powder was splendid and the low-hanging branches not too low-hanging.
