Not really by plan, I bushwhacked up through the birch glades, following various ski tracks and coming out just below the Jet Chair lift. From there I went down then up ski trails to the lodge and summit of Jay Peak. Continuing behind the lodge and following the ski trail down, I picked up the herd path to Big Jay by turning left through the fence which marked a right turn in the ski trail. The path was in great shape, packed well by skiers. On the return, below the lodge I turned onto the Long Trail, which showed little evidence of recent traffic, following the blazes back to the parking lot. In retrospect, I'm glad I went up through the quite beautiful glades. With the deep snow, coming down the upper half of the Long Trail was a bit slow getting through the snow filled limbs. Great views from Jay Peak and the herdpath to Big Jay, and the conditions were excellent for snowshoeing. |
