Comments
Comments: despite seeing lots of bare ground on the drive there is still plenty of snow up high. the trail is heavily travelled and well packed out to the sunrise shelter. beyond that it had less use, but there was still a solid rail of snow (probably mostly from skiers) up to the chittenden brook trail junction with some wet snow on top. beyond that junction there had still clearly been some use over winter, but significantly less and it was harder to stay over the packed snow. when farr peak was roughly to my southwest i left the trail and climbed somewhat steeply up to the ridgeline north of the peak. woods were wide open with deep semi supportive snow. for the most part i stayed on top, but when i did go through it was to the thighs. up on the ridge i would say there is still around 3-4 feet of snow on average and i may be conservative on that. i continued south along the ridge on a gradual uphill to the highpoint with open spruce forest the whole way. i then back tracked to the sunrise shelter and left from behind the shelter on a bushwhack to goshen. the snow was less supportive than on farr and i found myself deeply postholing more often, but partway up i came upon some old ski tracks that lended a firmer surface. these tracks ultimately led all the way to the summit through gloriously open woods. i returned the same way and followed the long trail back to the trailhead.

nice day to get back over to vermont. this proved to be a real great hike. both peaks had nice woods with goshen being extra spectacular. totally wide open with great views north and east from the summit area. it's obvious why skiers like it up there. a dark overcast held on and there was on and off spitting snow up high, but still nice looks to the surrounding peaks from various points. good day to be out.
