i parked at the stowe resort cross country center. the trails leave from the far back right corner of the lot. one could also park before a gate on ranch brook road and pick up the burt trail from there saving a little bit of walking. |

a map of the ski trails was very helpful for this hike. from the trailhead area i dropped down to ranch brook road which becomes the burt trail. walking was smooth and fast along the nice trail/road making the first couple miles great. at the bear run junction the burt trail turns left and becomes more like i expected from the xc trails. there was some low growth and a few boggy spots, but overall i was quite pleased. i imagine later in the summer the trail will be much more grown in and not as pleasant. trail junctions were well marked. more undergrowth higher up, but still ok to dewey saddle. i knew there had been an old trail up dewey at one point so was looking for possibilities. all i saw were some new diamond shaped red markers on a trail not shown on the ski map. i followed it briefly until it turned downhill and east and decided it must be a new ski trail. i would find out later i was wrong. so i took a line to bushwhack directly at dewey soon finding cliffs i contoured around to the west. i found a steep, but good line up above the first cliffs then started hitting thick woods and more small cliffs. after some work i hit a more open level area with a great view to bolton and some more of those red markers in a different configuration. this led from the view point to join a red diamond marked trail (more of a marked herd path) that led up to the first summit bump. beyond that there were not markers, but remnants of a trail/herd path to the recognized highpoint. heading down i followed the red markers down a grown in path, much nicer than another thick bushwhack, that went around the cliffs to the east eventually passing a sign for the "kingsford trail to dewey mountain". this point was about 75 yards beyond where i had turned around earlier. oops. doing some research after it seems this trail comes all the way up from lake mansfield theroetically following the route of the old trail shown on some maps and coincides with the sky top trail before reaching dewey saddle. near the parking lot i mixed it up hiking a couple different ski trails on the way out.
nice hike. i decided to take a chance that the ski trails could be gross, but they turned out to be great at this point in the season anyway. gave myself some extra work getting up dewey, but smooth coming down. had hoped to find some more views, but the nice look to clark, mayo, bolton and lake mansfield shortly before the summit area was the best i came across. |
