Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: No Parking issues. We parked at the Smugglers Notch parking area and did the short road walk to the Long Trail South. Lovely bathrooms at Smugglers Notch.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Watercrossings were small and easily managed, even with the heavy rains the night before. That being said, most of the trails were covered with running water and mud. It still was very manageable - we just paid more attention to our footing.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple of old blowdowns on the Long Trail (climb overs) and one on the Haselton (climb under). Trails are well blazed and easy to follow. There is one area on the Long Trail that looks like you should take a left, but if you pay attention to the blazes, you will have no issues. When you get to the end of the Summit Ridge trail just follow the trail (across from the road) until you get to the summit station. Follow the Blue blazes on the road to the Stone house gate, following blazes down the ski slope, Haselton will then go into the woods. It's easily followed from this point.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I didn't take my dog today, but there is a 1/10 of a mile portion of the trail close to the top of the Long Trail south that may be difficult for dogs. This part is a straight up hand to foot scramble. The rest of the trail should be fine.
Bugs
Bugs: No bugs until we got to the ski slope/Haselton trail. Then we had to pull out the head nets because of black flies and mosquitoes.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: I asked the ranger about hiking the Nose and whether or not you could follow the trail down to Haselton (rather than backtracking down). The ranger said yes, but the trail to the summit of Nose is closed right now. Rangers are very eager to provide you with information about the trails. The one we spoke with asked the route we took, trail conditions, asked if we needed any water, etc. Great employees :). I will post a photo blog in the next couple of days.
