Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Mansfield (The Chin), VT
Trails
Trails: Hell Brook Trail, Long Trail, Profanity Trail, roadwalk
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, August 9, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We parked in the Big Spring turnout. There is room for several cars. There were 2 or 3 when we got there and maybe 4 or 5 when we returned. Hell Brook Trail seems to get lighter use than other trails to Mansfield so this small lot seems adequate. There are other parking opportunities in the vicinity if this lot happens to be full. To help you find the small lot and the trailhead across the road, it is exactly where the double yellow line in the road ends as it enters Smugglers Notch.

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: I don't remember any.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails are well maintained.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I am not a dog owner, but Hell Brook Trail does not seem to be the trail to take your dog up (or down). We did meet a hiker coming down maybe half a mile up the trail. His short-legged Corgi had decided she had had enough of this trail and refused to go any further up. So they had turned around. But Hell Brook Trail is not a trail fit for descent by either man or beast. I hope they made it down without mishap.
Bugs
Bugs: I don't remember any issues.

Comments
Comments: Hell Brook Trail lived up to its name. Apparently designed and built by Satan himself. Supposed to be the steepest trail in VT and I will not argue that point. (don't descend that way, you are being warned). After Hell Brook we took some other trail (I don't think it was the Long Trail but it might have been) over the Adam's Apple. Then we went over The Chin and down the Profanity Trail, also aptly named. Then we took the Long Trail down to Rt 108 and roadwalked the .8 or so back to the car. Nice hike with Lone Wolf.
