A wet snow was falling as we hiked up through the park roads. It turned into a more powdery snow higher up on the ledges and the wind picked up as well. Exposed rock was rime ice but good traction with micro spikes. Almost a white out hiking up to The Chin with few cairns visible and quite windy. We went down the Laura Cowles Trails which was steep but out of the wind. It had about 6" of powder on top of crust on top of 4" of corn snow on top of a river of ice. Couldn't help butt sliding as everything gave way as soon as you put any weight on it. I finally put crampons on after a few wicked falls. One member of our group bare booted the entire hike. She is pretty light on her feet. |
