Comments
Comments: I recommended light traction or traction only because it will be necessary if the snow re-freezes. I used crampons on Profanity Trail, but I may not have needed them; kicking steps with mountaineering boots would probably have been sufficient. Packed snow and ice were completely covered with 1-2" of fresh, wet snow, and even on the exposed ridge, patches of ice were thoroughly coated with a soft layer of rime ice. The only spot I found difficult to navigate without traction footwear was a patch of ice near the bottom of the mountain (it was covered on the way up, but the snow had melted 5 hours later, exposing gray ice). Snowshoes would be helpful if you go off trail at higher elevations. Keep in mind that I did not attempt the north face of the Chin. I suspect crampons and possibly an ice axe would be a necessity on that route.
