Had in my head a crazy day and wanted to do CH from Burrows Trail. There was a sign going into Burrows TH that said the road is closed to just local traffic. So I headed back up the Winooski for the Monroe Trail. As I said above was surprised to find the summer TH open.
It was a different type of hike from my peaceful morning. Probably 30-40 poeple out and it looked like about 1/2 had spikes. Trail was dry or with a little mud to the dean trail cutoff. After that the ice began to build and by the shaded ledge areas were full blown flow ice. Most of the that was of the softer variety ice. The last .3 on the long trail was hard ice and could be hazardous in the right circumstances. I can report that while many hikers did not have spikes they were very mostly fashionably dressed. Thank god I'm heading back to the ADK's next week :) |
