Comments
Comments: Rated as one of the easiest approaches to Mansfield - The Haselton trailhead leaves from above the parking lot at the gondola. To get to the trailhead head uphill from the lot crossing under the gondola aiming for the dirt road that accesses the ski slopes to left the lodge. The trail starts on the left side of the road where the trees begin above the lawn and is marked by a sign; The trail heads up in the wood adjacent to ski slopes; where the trail intersects the ski slope (first time) head across the slope and re-enter the woods (sign). The trail intersects another ski trail - this time follow the ski trail up (a sign marks the spot to enter the woods on the way back down) - you'll end up at the toll road after about 1/4 mile, head 1/2 mile up the toll road (lots of car traffic!) to the visitor center to link up to the long trail to cross the ridge. Haselton trail had a lot of leaf cover; some wet spots up higher which in a wetter season might lead to running water and slippery rocks on the trail in spots. A nice easy way to get up to the ridge with the only steep part the last stretch walking up the ski slope. Dry rocks across the ridgeline on the long trail from the nose to the chin. A sunny day with 100 mile views with peak foliage! Lots of people out today on the long trail - be warned that the stretch from the nose to the chin is heavily travelled by people driving up the toll road to the visitor center - today was as crowded as a crowded day along Franconia ridge.
