Wet snow coming down gently when we first arrived and continued for a short while. Lots of snow had melted since we last hiked this trail. First mile and a half was a mix of intermittent ice and hard-packed snow. Could also see the rocks, mud and vegetation. Microspikes gave sufficient traction all the way. Once on the ridge (about 1-and-a-bit miles in) there was about an inch of wet fresh snow cover on trail which caused some snow accumulation under the spikes, but nothing too annoying. Defined trail all the way to the summit. Some ice, much of which had just enough snow cover to give good grip. Stunningly beautiful woodsy surroundings - most of the snow is off the trees or thawing and dripping from branches onto our lightweight rain jackets. Still, there is lots of snow on the ground. Took us 2 hours to get to Hut Clearing (we are older and take our time) where we layered up for the last lap to the top. Nice climb to the summit. Snow on summit, but also lots of exposed rock. Some blue sky, sun shining, fast-moving clouds, misty at times, some views. Temps quite mild, slight wind. Breathtaking. |
