Comments
Comments: Very cold start -6 but blue sky. Road walk to the the gate was packed snow on ice. Eagles cut trail has been well traveled with packed snow. Laura Cowles had some new snow covering. Laura was easily discernible and it looked as if some one bare booted up yesterday (or so)and left lots of deep postholes. The foot prints disappeared and snow drifts were common, averaging 2-3 feet at times. Nearer the top of Laura the spruce branches were weighted down by snow/ice and we had to crawl on our knees through tunnels of these branches. The final scramble up the exposed ridge line of Mansfield showed how protected from the wind we had been. The wind was brutally cold and when we reached the Sunset/Laura Junction we decided we had gone high enough today and were happy to descend Laura Cowles out of the wind once again. The trail is perfect for snowshoes.
