Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mendon Peak, Killington Peak, VT
Trails
Trails: Woods road, bushwhack, Long Trail, Killington Spur, Bucklin Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, May 26, 2018
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lot at Brewers corners has room for some cars, more room next to the road at the parking lot too. Make sure not to leave too much room between vehicles so as many as possible can fit. Don't block the gate to the road, it is actively being used and I believe was even used as I was packing up my gear
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Bridged on the trails, rock hops on the woods roads with possible slightly submerged rocks depending on where you cross
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Bushwhack and woods roads as expected with some debris and a couple blowdowns blocking the path. One blowdown on the Long Trail just south of Cooper Lodge. A couple leaners and one blowdown (easy climb over) could be cleaned up on the Bucklin Trail
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Doable for dogs if they do well off trail
Bugs
Bugs: The bugs were relentless and the worst I have ever seen. They will swarm you when you stop and will still be highly bothersome while walking. Bring some sort of repellent or protection, I forgot mine at home. They weren't bad on Killington thanks to the breeze and were tolerable on the Bucklin Trail in places
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found one water bottle on the way to Mendon and the usual trash once back on the trails

Comments
Comments: With research before hand (see my trip report and others) the route to Mendon is pretty easy to follow, for a trailess peak. I followed a herd path from the third cairn all the way to the summit of Mendon, but there are multiple paths until you get closer so you might not be as lucky. The woods road to Killington went quick before it turns to a herd path and heads up to the Long Trail. Trails were in great shape and there were a fair amount of people out but not as many as I would have expected for a holiday weekend. I didn't see anyone until Cooper Lodge. #92 of 100 today, only 8 to go.
