Holy snow! Visited my friend who lives in Norwich, VT, and drove out to Vershire for a hike. Surprised to find that this area has had an entirely different winter than my friend's place in Norwich or where I live in southern NH. Totally unprepared for deep deep unpacked powder! We postholed through the forest along a 2,200' ridge for as far as we could before feeling exhausted and during around. We may have made it 0.4 mi out towards Hawkins Mountain. We could not believe the depth of snow. Depth ranged from 24 - 36" the whole trail, and snow reports in the Vershire/Chelsea area confirm this. We were sinking down to our crotch/hip area and still not reaching the ground level. A beautifully sunny, calm, and quiet day to explore some lovely woods. Snowshoes would be the only necessary equipment, if only we had realized the conditions. |
