Comments
Comments: L.T. out of Smuggler's Notch (Stowe side)well packed but mushy enough that snowshoes are needed. Trail gets confusing with snowboard/ski tracks interspersed, but white blazes are visible up to Taft Lodge. Above here it's always nebulous in winter, for Profanity follow glades angling left to the gullies, for L.T. head straight up to the saddle and then the Chin. Very steep either way, was able to use MSR snowshoes today in the soft snow but wouldn't go up here without full crampons. After summiting the Chin(4,393') I came back down Profanity to just above treeline and traversed north to Eagle Pass and the Adam's Apple(4,060'), descending from there to the L.T. at "the cabin"(Taft Lodge). Snow in the alpine zone has a solid base, though slightly unstable in the gullies today with the warmth. An excellent mountain experience awaits those who don't mind some route finding.
