Hiked up to Taft Lodge Tuesday night and had the place to myself - spikes car to lodge. Surprisingly well "insulated" (or at least cracks sealed), stayed reasonably warm and slept pretty well! Woke up before sunrise and enjoyed my breakfast w/ red/orange light pouring through the front windows. Took LT south to the Chin - snow had melted a bit since I was there Saturday, which exposed some ice underneath making for an interesting climb to the top. Crampons/axe definitely helped.
The trip down the Profanity Trail back to Taft Lodge was a little frustrating. My friend and I had broken a reasonably nice trail using snowshoes through powder on Saturday. Had it been left to freeze/thaw/consolidate - there probably would've been a stable monorail... unfortunately someone plomp'd through w/o snowshoes since Saturday and it was a postholed mess which is about to re-freeze. Bummer.
Taft Lodge down back to the car was uneventful - spikes all the way. |
