Decided last minute midday to run-up Camels Hump so got a very late start. I actually love and thoroughly enjoy hiking in the dark which I got a few miles of today. Reached the trailhead at 3, summited at 5, down to the car at 7:30; took a bit longer than expected from conditions plus in the dark is probably about a -10% on my mph. Barebooted up and most of the way down but put on spikes for about a mile after almost slipping in a spot right above the really steep section on Burrows Tr and took them off when it moderated and my spikes started balling up. The bottom of Burrows Tr is an extremely wet, muddy, sloppy mess with a dusting of snow up to about 3000' at which it becomes about 2-3" of powder with ice under the snow in spots; on the summit cone the snow is about 4-6" with some deeper wind drifts. Microspikes are recommended, anything else is overkill as the trail is very bony and another few inches of snow are required to fully cover the rocks. Saw 4 or 5 other people all on the bottom half of Burrows Tr which was expected with my late start. |
