Decided to hike from the Underhill side of the mountain, as per Mary’s recommendation (caretaker at Lonesome Lake this summer—thank you!). The CCC Road approach is a nice warm up. Maple Ridge Trail requires some bouldering and other rock maneuvers that kids and dogs might not be fond of. Definitely wear shoes with good traction on Maple Ridge. Lots of time above treeline, and thankfully the weather was perfect for it. The visitor's center at the top of the auto road was closed, but there are portapotties nearby and we had a nice chat with a GMC worker who was stationed near the center.
There is a $4 per person fee for the use of Underhill State Park, regardless of where you park your vehicle. During peak operating hours you'll hand your cash directly to a ranger and get change. |
