Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The State Park beach parking lot (on Beach Road across from the swimming beach) is open during the park off-season. There's no reason to park on VT 12 by the front gate. There's a lot of room for parking and it's plowed a day or so after storms.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Ice - Breakable Crust
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Nothing significant on an Elmore Mountain hike. A few small streams still running from recent rains.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No issues with several step over blowdowns. One spruce across the ridge trail (a little north of balancing rock) that can be just pushed through easily.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: June Bug had a good time doing her first "loop" on Elmore. Still some open/running water to drink. A few other dogs were out too enjoying the fine early winter day.
Bugs: None
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: N/A
Comments: Temps in the 20s and the ground has pretty much refrozen after the midweek rains. The snowpack has all melted and just some patches up high. Micro spikes are recommended for going up the Fire Tower trail from the cabin foundation/vista to the Fire Tower. However, the ice here can be avoided or negotiated with care and the primary winter bypass is free of snow and ice. The ice in this segment is wet and soft and is freezing in a stair like manner; so, with spikes you can just walk up the trail without worry. The ridge is almost completely free of any snow and ice on the trail.
