Beautiful trail conditions and weather with bluebird skies west, north, and east. Except for the first part on the snowmobile path before crossing the road, the majority of the hike from Northern Parking Lot (winter lot) to Owls Head was packed nicely for micro spikes. Snowshoes are warranted in a few locations, but overkill in others. Today (18F) at trailhead, low 20s hiking, little wind but breezy towards the end, conditions underfoot were cold and solid. Maybe 3-5" in unpacked areas off trail. Ice on rock stair case sections just before summit, significant enough that you want spikes. Views today were to the Adirondacks, many sections of the Green Mountains, and locally in Groton State Forest. What a day! |
