The Lincoln Gap Road is closed down to about 1.5 miles from the Long Trail trailhead. Snow is piled up about 6" - 9" deep on the road, and although people have hiked up it the ascent to the trailhead is still somewhat strenuous. |

I got to the Long Trail the morning after the snowstorm in the Green Mountains, and unfortunately was anticipating a bit less snow than there was. The snow on the ground for the Long Trail is piled up notably higher than that on the road (which was already 6" - 9" deep) -- I'd say varying from 9" - 15" deep with occasionally higher drifts. I had to trailbreak up the length of the trail to the intersection with the Battell Trail (which someone, thankfully, had hiked up to the shelter), and then from above Battell Shelter to the peak of Mount Abraham. At the peak, the rocks are icy and a little bit slippery, and there MicroSpikes will definitely come in handy. The peak was quite windy, but clouds and snow had visibility socked down to maybe 200 yards total -- not a great vista, unfortunately. |
