The last 0.4 mile of Camel's Hump Rd, despite not being plowed, was passable with 4x4 and good tires. Some parts were icy though, and I did feel my truck slide a little bit driving back down it. |

Both Mt. Ethan Allen and Camel's Hump had full, continuous snow coverage from base to summit. Depths ranged from about 1-3 inches at lower elevations to 4-6 higher up. The Monroe Trail and the 0.3 mile section of the Long Trail descending the north side of the summit cone were like a hard-packed highway, especially in the early afternoon. The Dean Trail wasn't quite as well-traveled but still had a fair bit of recent traffic. The LT between the The Allis Trail and the summit of Ethan Allen was tracked out to about 1/2 mile from the summit, at which point the footprints abruptly stopped and the trail from there was untouched. The Allis Trail was also untouched. That said, the snow on the unbroken portions wasn't deep enough for snowshoes.
Light traction was the way to go for the most part, although I switched to crampons when going up the last 0.1 mile or so to Camel's Hump's summit. That portion, due to facing south and being very exposed, had a LOT of glare ice that was much safer (IMO) to ascend in crampons.
Sub-freezing temps all day with -20 to -30 windchill on top of Camel's Hump, but the excellent views from both peaks as well as hiking through the ice-laden higher-elevation forest was so worth it. |
