Comments
Comments: Generally trail is in good condition. First two miles are an easy walk with minor ups and downs then the steady climb begins shortly after Irene Falls. Trail is close to Brewers Brook to this point. Although the climb is steady after about 2 miles, the footing is still good to the AT/LT and not as rough as the White Mountains in NH. Just past the intersection of Bucklin with the AT/LT is Cooper Lodge- a shelter that looks a little more beaten than I remember when last here in 2021. Only on the AT/LT for a short distance before starting up the spur to the summit. The spur is only about 0.2 mi according to the sign but it's a steep boulder climb. It was a bit crowded, windy and cool at the tower on the summit so I kept going to the gondola where it was less windy and enjoyed the views to Pico and two other peaks of Killington- Bear Mountain and Skye Peak. Lots of bikers and hikers who took the gondola up and tourists just enjoying the summit lodge and the view. I had lunch under the gondola (plenty of chairs and picnic tables around the summit lodge area) then headed back down. Was slow going descending that steep 0.2 mi. to Cooper Lodge but then I was able to pick up my pace the rest of the way. Another great day in the mountains!
