I hiked Camel’s Hump for sunrise. Burrows was a great trail for this peak; it’s a steady climb with terrific footing and no scrambles. Sunrise was beautiful, with a small amount of undercast. There was also a low-lying thick layer of wildfire smoke, so the initial view of the sun was that creepy deep red color. Others had hiked for sunrise and they all left while the sun was still in the wildfire smoke. I stayed until the sun rose above the smoke (about 630am) and it was definitely worth the wait!
Even though sunrise was terrific, it was the Long Trail between the summit and Forest City that was truly amazing. There are some Mahoosuc-Notch-flavor scrambles in that section, mixed with some terrific views! There are two down-scrambles that were challenging to descend (no handholds) and ended up just being a slow slide for me. In the other direction I think that I would have had trouble climbing them so I would suggest bringing a tall friend, if you hike this in the reverse direction.
Forest City had great footing.
The Connector trail has a beautiful bridge over a really deep gorge - I am happy that I got to see that little spot.
I would absolutely hike this loop again! |
