Stratton Mountain was cloaked in her winter finest yesterday, stocked with beautiful snow-encrusted trees and monochromatic drifts. While the trench is perfectly formed, the snow is still soft, and we encountered some shin-deep postholes that must have been uncomfortable for a few folks. We wore snowshoes door to door, which smoothed out the trail, and came in clutch with the snow squalls that added an extra 2-3 inches of powder, covering our previous tracks. The trap door to the tower was frozen shut, probably due to blowing snow coming through the broken windows melting and refreezing 😔. Three major blowdowns that all have snowshoe routes around them. Snow pack at trailhead is approximately 6-8in, higher up over 2 feet, and some of the drifts beside the trench are waist high! The tower stairs were thick with snow and rime ice, so we switched to Hillsounds to ascend and descend the stairs. |
