Comments
Comments: Solo hike up Burke & W Peak. Lower Red Trail is packed flat along the snowmobile trail portion, and well packed by boots up the the junction of West Peak Trail. Beyond, all trails were soft and not packed out sufficiently; snowshoes were (and probably still are) the best tool. Significant drifting in places. Snow higher up is 1.5 deep or so, only about 4" or so down below. Wore spikes to the trail junction then snowshoes where I followed a single snowshoe track over W Peak and to the main summit. That track got off trail in a few places; I course corrected with my own tracks. Profile was not broken out at all but I did so. There's some bootleg snowboard & ski use of Red Trail near the ski area--might be wise to ascend by Red so that you can see what's coming at you instead of being ambushed and KO'd & descend by safer West Peak Trail. Fire tower steps are caked with snow, not very icy. Occasional trail ice. Crisp day on the summit.
