Long Trail is beat by skiers on new snow. We ascended along with a few from Quebec. They veered from the trail (as we had bout done enough branch whacking for the last half mile) just before we hit the road. The LT there is unbroken. Took the ski trail proper to the summit house and warmed up in one of the two warming porticos with a gaggle of skiers. We rolled the dice and headed immediately to Big Jay. We'd summit Jay Peak on the return, hoping the winds would subside even a little. -40°F windchill on negative single digits up there. The winds whipping through. Every NW facing exposure we hit along the frequently skied bushwhack was a barrage of freezing 30 mph wind. We were grateful to have our way facilitated by ski traffic. One thing to say about Vermont. There's often ski tracks going where you want to go. |
