Comments
Comments: Lots of snow here, snowshoes went on right away, as it was soft off the monorail. I ended up taking them off 1 mile in and taking a chance with posthole-roulette in bare boots, as there were alternating patches of bare rock and deep snow. Temps dropped and it was wicked cold and windy at the tower, but I got some nice sunset lighting. I didn’t stay too long as the missing window panes and metal sides made for a loud and violent experience. I was able to make it out without a headlamp by 7:45, balancing on the monorail. 3:15 round trip. Not terrible considering the challenging conditions, but it will be much worse when it warms up. I spent the night in my tent on some grass at Grout Pond picnic area. The fee tube was covered, so I didn’t pay. It looked like camping was allowed here, but not at the AT parking lot. Glad the road was frozen, because it will be a mess when it thaws.
