Comments
Comments: Beginning the next hiking period in my life having moved from Maine to Vermont. Given the smoke from the wildfires the views from the peaks are all obscured in Vermont so chose this hike to a cool location. Took long trail out out and Babcock trail back. Nice easy loop with mostly moderate grades though there are ups and downs the entire way. There is one quite step section 1.7 miles in but it has rock steps to get you down. Patches of mud throughout but nothing you can't generally walk through. The gulch itself is well worth the visit. Sheer rock walls on both sides. The trail through the gulch is a bit rugged scrambling under and over wet rocks and slabs. We found a nice spot in the middle to hang out for a while. If you go through the gulch and up a ways you will arrive at Spruce ledge camp which has a nice view though not so good today with all the smoke. Return trip on Babcock takes you alongside a pond with lots of beaver activity. About 5 miles for the trip.
