Comments
Comments: A gem of a hike. Trail markings are excellent (what do you expect for the Long Trail), generally moderate grades the entire way. A bit of mud but nothing you can't just walk through. You'll come to a short sidehill section with does drop off but once past that BAM! you're walking along some impressive overhanging cliffs which today has some nice drips of cold water coming off which was nice given the heat. Many people come here in winter just to see the ice on the cliffs. The rocks can be slick here so pay a little extra attention. You'll head up a bit and then along another section of cliffs. Past this there is a small cleft with a stream which you head up, rocks are wet but footing is good. This is spot to pay attention to on the way back - heading back there is a path that heads straight out onto a ledge along the cliffs which would make for a challenging bushwalk to get off. Make sure and take a right down into the cleft (double blaze marking). A short climb past this and you're at Laraway lookout, a small little ledge with some impressive views taking in the mountains around Mansfield and the notch with views out over Lake Champlain on to the Adirondacks. A little hazy today but could still see quite a ways. Bugs were particularly fierce here. Summit is another easy .4 mile and anticlimactic, just a sign in the trees. Met a number of day hikers and a group of three women section hiking this part of the long trail; shared some bug spray so they could save their supply. If you're in the area a definite hike to take!
