 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Small lot with 5 cars on arrival at 9:45am. I grabbed the last spot as all cars had provided themselves with “ample” space to exit their vehicles. |

 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |

 | Recommended Equipment: |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Water is plentiful in this area but the crossing were all easy. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Evidently the Hell Brook Cutoff is in really bad shape. I’d read on other platforms that there were some blowdowns but then today I heard it first hand from two different hikers who used it and suggested there were at least 20 sizable blowdowns within it’s .06 mile stretch. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
None |
|
 | Bugs: |
Some buzzing in the wet spots, but no need for bug spray or deer fly patches thankfully. |
|
 | Lost and Found: |
A half full water bladder stuck in a tree halfway up Hell Brook. I left it there, hoping it’s owner left there for the return, maybe? |

Hell Brook is fun and tough. I was reminded of Madison Gulf Tr and Great Gully Tr. a bit. It would seem this trail might be T25 worthy if it were in the Whites. There was plenty of running water and moisture on a couple of the scrambles, 1 of them required four points of contact and some faith in the toe holds. In most of the tricky spots however, there always seemed to be well placed root to grab on to.
Mansfield summit was quite busy today thanks to the perfect weather. I was going to go to the Nose, but after getting a late start, I had hit my turnaround window and decided to call it and head down Profanity and make a call on taking the cutoff or the longer Long. I’d read reports that the cutoff was in bad shape and was warned by a hiker just coming off it in the AM that is was filled with at least 20 blowdowns that were of good size. When Intood a break at it’s intersection of Long, a pair came out and were saying how nice it was to actually be on a trail again. I was up for a gentler walk and took Long to a section where it bends hard to the south and bushwhacked anout .3 miles down to Rt 108, shaving a good .75 miles of road walk.
