Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Trailhead for this side of Camel's Hump state park is up Camel's Hump road which is off Duxbury road in Duxbury - follow the main road with occasional signs to it's end. A lot more parking on this side with two main lots one right at trailhead and 100 yards below and the overflow (winter trailhead) 0.3 miles below. Many cars today but there were still a number of spots in the lot right at the trailhead. Outhouse available for those in need. Note: Access to the other side (Burrows, Forest City trailheads) is also on Camel's Hump road which comes up from Huntington but the roads do not connect.

Comments
Comments: This was plan B. Originally planned on hiking up from the other trailhead to Mount Ethan Allen but the lot was full with as was the lower trailhead for Forest City trail. Even though clearly signed with do not park along the road for it's entire length or you will be towed there were numerous cars parked at any spot they could find that didn't block the road - For those looking at this side, plan on getting there really early pretty much any day of the week.

Headed around the other side for my hike. Most people were taking the trails up to Camel's Hump but I veered off on the Dean Trail towards Mount Ethan Allen. Both the Monroe to the point where I turned on to the Dean Trail and the Dean trail itself are in great shape and ascend at mostly easy grades. Trails were both dry. By the time I made it to the Long trail junction I was breathing heavy -turns out hiking when air quality level was unhealthy to very unhealthy due to the Canadian wildfires can make hiking a bit more challenging. Opted not to head to the summit - I took a turn onto the Allis trail which is a short trail that connects to the long trail up the side of Mount Ethan Allen. There is a viewpoint with a bench (actually bog bridge) that provides a limited view up to the summit of Camel's Hump. Steepest trail of the Day was the long trail which also had a few spots of water and mud - descended this trail down to Montclair Glen Lodge for a break and a snack and then followed the long trail back to the dean trail junction. Heading back down the Dean trail you can catch views of the steep cliffs of lower Camel's hump. I found a short spur I missed on the way up which takes to another obstructed view of the cliffs and the summit of Camel's Hump. All in 5.3 miles with about 1500 feet of elevation gain. From the Dean trial junction up and down only saw on other person - a long trail thru hiker. If you looking for some piece and quiet and some nice woods walking this is a nice place to visit!
