I found a good trail to the summit today, a 1350’ climb. I took the first unsigned dirt road with a grassy centerline off of the gravel Atv route, which went NW’erly toward the summit at a nice grade. Surprisingly few blowdowns - just a couple I hardly had to duck under. Atvs have been using this road, which winds its way to the summit. It was all hardwoods on this side, with skid paths branching off but they are obviously less used. I found a few views that are probably better when leaves are gone. Near the top, I left the Atv trail and soon ended up on a blue blazed footpath to the summit jar and nasty old collapsed shelter. I followed the path a ways down but it was going towards the Concord Woods, or possibly even Victory State Forest. Some slight views west into VT on this trail. There are nice trails lower down on that side but I haven’t summited from Victory. Today I bushwhacked down towards the trail that goes to Miles South peak to explore more views from the steep rocky side, views of the Whites from Cannon to Madison. The walking was good, plenty of old skid paths but a few blackberry thorns in there too. It was a nice 3 hour hike, one hour up and 2 hours just exploring on the way down. |
