Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Scrag Mountain, VT
Trails
Trails: Blue North Trail, Blue South Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, August 31, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The parking area, at the end of Brooks Rd, is small with room for only a handful of cars - 5 would be stretching it. Today there were no other cars at this trailhead.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Water levels are extremely low - so the one crossing, on Blue North about halfway up, was trivial.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Both trails are well-maintained and marked with blue blazes.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: There is a rock scramble on Blue North that includes a rope; I doubt most dogs could manage this scramble. Blue South would be a better route for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: Today, none to speak of.

Comments
Comments: This is the trail system on the Northfield side of Scrag, which traverses private property and is maintained by the owner. It is not as well-known as the trail from the Waitsfield side, and the experience is very different as there are only these two trails, Blue North and Blue South, that meander through some of the remotest wilderness in central Vermont on their way to and from the two summits of Scrag Mt. Other than the passing airplane, the sounds of human civilization are nowhere to be heard at any point on this hike.
