Comments: Day two of our Vermont extravaganza-Mt. Mansfield is a real stunner. Can’t believe I’ve been living less than two hours away for ten years and have never hiked it-really excited to go back and check out other trails. Hike up the long trail to the Col was nice and easy. Kiddos wanted to skip the Adams Apple-what a mistake that would have been!!! For a three minute effort you get an incredible closeup of the Chin in all its glory. Was fun to see people scrambling up it before our turn. Spoke with guy on top who just came up Hellbrook and stated he thinks it is harder than any trail in the Whites due to its perpetual wetness. The climb up the Chin is really fun with some challenging scrambles that the kids really enjoyed. Passed a small group of kids on a field trip with two teachers-one of the kids was having an incredibly difficult time making it up the mountain-stopped to offer help but they said they were good and the kid eventually made it up we saw. Seems like an aggressive hike to take non-hiker young children up?! Ridge walk was stunning-I really enjoyed the hordes of tourists, some of whom were very nice and others of whom I felt like pushing off the edge of the mountain. Love those toll roads!!! Speaking of obnoxious infrastructure on beautiful summits-I think they could use a few more communications towers on the Nose-what a monstrosity that whole look is:( Walked the toll road a half mile to jump on Haselton, which begins as “The Nosedive” black diamond ski trail for a quarter mile. Needless to say it is really steep, but the views are amazing and worth the quadriceps hammering. Enjoyed the trail in the wooded section also-it meanders through many streams, and from other reports it sounds really wet at normal times. Today most the surfaces were dry. Overall, this was a magnificent loop. I think counter-clockwise was the way to go!
