My brother and I climbed up Pico via the Sherburne Pass Trail mid-day, starting at noon and ending around 3 PM. For all the news I'd been hearing about the terrific amounts of snow the higher elevations have been getting in Vermont, there was not as much snow as I would have expected on the trail. Pretty much the whole way we encountered rocks and roots poking out of the surface of the snow, with this happening less-frequently as we gained elevation. The trail is mostly well-packed snow, nonetheless, and my brother was able to hike all the way to the summit without even putting his microspikes on. Wisely, he chose to wear them for the descent. We encountered a group of eight hikers coming down the mountain early in the hike, and no one else the rest of the day. The ski area is slated to open December 12th, so please look out for skiers and riders at the summit after that point. |
