Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Equinox, VT
Trails
Trails: Red Gate Trail, Blue Summit Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, December 13, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Main parking lot can be found at the end of Union Street in Manchester. This lot was plowed and was at about half-capacity when I arrived early afternoon. Higher-capacity parking can be found lower on Union Street, to the right when looking at the mountain; this is an overflow parking lot for Burr and Burton and should not be used during school hours. This lot has a link to the Blue Trail near the athletics field behind the academic building.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: There are no water crossings on this trail, although there is a spur trail about halfway up to a spring. Sounded like the spring was still running today.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The lower-elevation trails within the Preserve Trust were being plowed today for access to the Thompson's Acres property. Hikers should be aware that plow trucks can be on the trail for the first half-mile from the parking lot.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Per Equinox Preserve Trust rules, dogs must be under control at all times and on leash when approaching other trail users. Clean-up bags are available at kiosks at the beginnings of each trail.
Bugs
Bugs: Nothing to mention today.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing to mention today.

Comments
Comments: Thought I would climb up Equinox today and then do some shopping afterward in Manchester. Started at about 1:45 PM, which was just about the latest I was willing to set out on a hike this length in December, and finished right before 5 PM. Saw one other hiker the whole day, we passed each other right near the spur to the spring halfway up. The whole trail to the summit was broken out and has a nice snowshoe trench at this point; I would recommend hikers continue to use snowshoes over the next few days to really grade the trail well before we get some freezing rain on Thursday. The side trail to Lookout Rock was not broken out.
