 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
We started driving up snow covered FR 59 until we came to a closed road sign. There was one house out here and I chatted with the owner who thought we were trying to park in their driveway. Tire tracks kept going past the closed road sign (opens May 1st). We didn’t want to get in trouble so we parked at the trailhead for Burnt Hill and walked 2.5ish miles up to Skylight Pond trailhead. Later we saw other hikers had walked the road from the north, so maybe that parking spot is closer, but it would be a longer drive for us. |

 | Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Postholes |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction, Skis |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Hoppable or shallow enough to walk on submerged rocks. Could be tricky in high water but I think you could maybe bushwhack up from the road to avoid the first one, and the second one was bridged. |

It was very cold here, zero degree windchill at the summit with fresh powder, about 2”. We walked the road in spikes on icy tire tracks, then snowshoes went on as we started to go uphill. The grade is gentle with switchbacks that were sometimes hard to follow. We got up to the ridge pretty quick and had lunch in the nice cabin at the pond. Lots of moose postholes on the Long Trail but it wasn’t easy to stay on it, so gps came in handy and we also cut some corners by bushwhacking. No summit markers that I could find and we were socked in so no views anyway if there were any. A rather aimless and unrewarding hike just doing the NEHH and it didn’t even count for winter, but it was my first time, second attempt. We had fun bushwhacking straight down to cut the switchbacks, I was thinking these would be great woods for skiing if I had a touring setup. |
